Upon first inspection, I appear to be a perfect match:

Then there are it's antonyms, which also describe me to a tee:

confident, extroverted, unashamed, unreserved

Being shy and being social do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Do I sometimes feel uncomfortable? Sure.

Do I face uncertainty? Absolutely.

Do I let it affect my behaviour and choices? Absolutely not.

I'm too stubborn to let myself act shy.

I am none of these:

As my sister says; "You reach an age where being shy is no longer socially acceptable. The last thing any of us want to do is offer ourselves up on a platter. However, no one wants to be the socially awkward adult at the cocktail party either."

Likewise, as we mature we're encouraged to compromise, to foster understanding, and to control our own wilfulness. But in no way does that require us to bend to another's will, give up our individuality, or be mindful of the thought police.

What then do I mean, when I call myself "shy"?

After years of cultivating the perfect, reliable, permissive athletic demeanor, I notice a stark dichotomy between my gregarious nature, and my conservative, reserved, well-trained background.

I can be managed, mindful, and refined - AND- impulsive, strong-willed, and robust.

I have all of these attributes, and many, many more.

So, for the record, I am shy

Taboo Sex Show

Another month, another convention

This time it was The Taboo Naughty but Nice Sex Show at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

While SuicideGirls did not have a booth this year, we were still in attendance, reppin SG!

As always, it was great to visit another convention. I love contrasting the events I go to, and seeing what works, and what doesn't. I like to walk each floor plan, watch the consumers, consider the marketing, check out the style and quality of vendors, and take in the performances.

At this stage, I've been to enough that I get to see familiar faces, and catch up with booth pals from years past. It's quickly becoming one of my fave things about show life! For so many years I lived out of my suitcase on the road, and met new people every day. Seeing familiar faces is a fairly recent addition to my travels, and the novelty has definitely not worn off.

It was also an excuse to shop! Rydell and Cheri took full advantage, and picked up some sexy little things, and treats for the boys

Cupcake Galavanting

Because no trip is complete without a cupcake...

I recently met Geoff & Jeremy of ManCakes Bakery

1) They're babes!

2) They're babes with cupcakes!!

From the brand's aesthetic to their taste in cake, these guys have terrific style, vision, and an excellent product on their hands. I like that they took an item already on shelves and gave it their unique stamp and effort.

"Life is nothing without creativity, so get out there and create!"

"These cupcakes are not frilly things with inches of decorative icing and pretty sprinkles smeared on top. These are MANCAKES. Every aspect of these cupcakes has been designed to create the best possible flavour combinations."

From Buffalo Wing, to Pink Peppercorn Grapefruit, they offer delightful, but decidedly "manly" options.

Obviously I had to give one a try...

I chose The Breakfast Cupcake; Vanilla base, filled with bacon & egg custard, topped with a maple syrup buttercream, and crushed almond tulle.

It was a match made in cupcake heaven.

FYI: ManCakes does not currently have a storefront, but takes orders via their website, and makes deliveries to Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminister, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, and Richmond, on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays.

"Protecting and Projecting Brand Values in the Age of Social Media"

I am the quintessential example of someone who wears two hats.

I am:

Tita - Former Canadian Champion and Professional Ice Skater, mentor to young athletes, and teacher

and

Tita - Alternative model, media personality, "Pin up Cutie", promotional representative, performer, and MC.

As you can see, living a "double life", and operating in varied environments (sometimes quite at odds with each other), is something I know very well.

When I moved into the marketing realm, it was important to acknowledge the risks involved with operating in two worlds, or in the case of my clients, to reassure them that handing their business or students over to me did not put them at risk of brand contamination.

I have spent many years practicing with various social media forums, using myself as the guinea pig, and during that time, I have learned firsthand the shortcomings of anonymity and privacy on the internet, and the dangers of advancing a brand contrary to your environment.

Ultimately, as individuals we have to understand that everything we upload onto the web, any content we create, all communication via text messaging, and each and every comment we post using online forums, has a life span that can far exceed our expectations, intent, and even our own life expectancy. Furthermore, the context of these items can morph and change, as they are propelled in directions alternate to their place of origin.

The reach of something as simple and seemingly harmless as a status update, is quite literally millions of people around the globe. Now imagine the scope of something like a nude photo, broadcast via an internationally acclaimed website (SuicideGirls), and you can imagine my interest in "what links lead to which content".

Sure, thoughts and opinions can be conveyed and spread using a pseudonym, but the accounts are ultimately traceable. (There are people out there who are far more computer savvy than me, to properly explain the technicalities.) Besides, at the end of the day, I look like me. So a simple name change isn't gonna fool anyone...

In this technological age, we must remember that no sooner does someone invent a new online platform, or create a means to connect with people around the world, then somebody else imagines a way to hack it, steal it, reproduce it, or forensically tear it apart.

Nothing is a secret so long as it is on the internet. You just have to know where to look

In order to be successful in my chosen fields, it has been necessary to respect my client's core values, and operate within in varied environments, all the while remaining detached from my own agendas AND portraying myself as one of them (which clearly I am not)

Thus far, I've worked with several brands outside of my own alt-community, and successfully kept the distinction between my personal views and interests, and those of my clients, or students.

However, as I begin to work on new projects, I am once again reminded of how precarious my standing is. With each post I make (including this one) I risk detection.

What will happen if I'm found out is anyone's guess. In the meantime, I'll utilize the knowledge I have gained practicing on my own "brand", to elevate those of my clients, and should it come to a showdown, I hope my good work speaks for itself.

And in case it doesn't, I've got a few incentive shots I'm not afraid to use ;)

Bacon Maple Cupcakes

Recipe courtesy of: Vanilla Garlic

Ingredients
* 4 1/2 tablespoons butter, room temperature
* 1/2 tablespoon bacon drippings (left in the fridge to become solid)
* 1 egg
* 5 tablespoons brown sugar
* 4 tablespoons maple syrup
* 1 1/4 cups self rising flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
* tiny tiny pinch kosher salt
* 1/4 cup milk
* 1/4 cup of minced bacon, cooked and drained

What you’ll do–
* 1) Cook some bacon in a fry pan (about 6 thick strips). Reserve the drippings and place in the fridge to solidify. Mince 1/4 a cup of the bacon. The chef should eat whatever is left to assure that the bacon is tasty.
* 2) Beat the crud out of the butter and solidified bacon fat ’till light and creamy. Add the brown sugar and maple syrup and beat well until combined.
* 3) Add the egg and beat until incorporated.
* 4) Sift the flour, salt, baking soda and powder together.
* 5) Add some of the flour and mix, then some of the milk, then continue to alternate the dry and wet ingredients, ending with the dry. Mix until just combined. Fold in the bacon. Taste and add more maple syrup, flour, or milk if needed for desired taste. Keep in mind the maple frosting is very sweet, and to add in very small increments for alterations as maple syrup in large amounts can break a cake batter.
* 6) Scoop into cupcake papers and bake at 350 F for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Be sure to rotate the pan after the first 15 minutes for even baking.

Maple Syrup Frosting

Ingredients
* 4 tablespoons of butter.
* 2 tablespoons of maple syrup.
* 1 cup of powdered sugar.
* turbinado sugar (optional, but recommended).
* coarse grain sea salt (optional, but recommended).

What You’ll Do –
* Combine the syrup and butter until combined. Add the sugar, a bit at a time, and whip at high speeds until combined. Pipe or spread onto cupcakes. Sprinkle on sea salt and turbinado sugar for decoration and a lot of added flavor.
(add some crumbled BACON TOO!)

Q: I have a rather long situation here. It all started about a year ago. I was working at a local Mexican food place. I met a woman there. I say that cause she is 38 and I am 29. Not much of an age difference. So we get to talking and we get along, cracking jokes, some NSFW. Then she gets fired and I don’t see her again until about a month ago. We saw each other in a local bar, had a few, caught up on things and exchanged numbers. We texted each other and met up at the bar again the next weekend. We hung out, drink, I watched her play pool, and we kissed a few times. Then we went to eat after a night of drinking. Then some drama happens. She ended up crying. I comforted her. Before we left to go home we stood in the parking lot and I held her. Everything seemed to be going well.

Then, the last time we hung out, she said some things that really got me all twisted up. She confessed to me that she doesn’t get with “good guys” like me cause she doesn’t want to get attached and then have something “as always” come along and mess it up. I didn’t know what to say. She told me that a big fear of hers is that a good guy would be right in her face and she wouldn’t know it. I joked, “Well he is probably sitting beside you and not standing in front of you.” She laughed, and after awhile we hugged and parted ways.

That conversation has been on my mind for the last few days. I don’t know what to say. My heart says to stick around ‘cause she makes me feel better about myself. I laugh and smile more when I am around her. I think of her constantly. We click really well. Everything seems so right. We have both confessed to “liking” each other multiple times. I guess my question is A) do I wait it out and see where it goes? or B) Just stay friends, be there for her when she needs me, and ;eave it at that? Or is there a 3rd option?

A: I believe in romance, but I'm definitely not a hopeless romantic. It's lovely that you two click, enjoy each others company, and that you think of her often. She certainly seems to acknowledge that you are good and caring, and are an overall "good guy." However, I think that her statement regarding not knowing when "it's right in front of her face" is a very big clue as to what to do...

Humans crave comfort, love, and support. We long to be safe, warm, well fed, and secure. When it comes to a partner, these items are usually high on the list of "wants." The rules of relationships are simple (although in practice, it's never easy to follow them). If someone "wants" you, they will let you know. There should be no question as to whether or not they like what you are offering, and want it in their life.

From where I'm sitting, it looks like you are prepared to provide, or work together to have all of those things, and yet, she is not running into your arms, and accepting comfort, love, and support from you. She is resistant to your good nature and care. Pay attention to that! I believe that ultimately, our fate is our own. For her to believe that things will go wrong because they "always do" indicates that she has a pattern of this in her life. She is the common denominator in those situations. (Now, I should point out that I'm in no way implying that people deserve everything they get. However, when it comes to life patterns and negative experiences, we have the power to change them for the better.)

Fear is not positive. It holds people back, and prevents them from experiencing, embracing and enjoying good things. She is scared she will miss out on a great guy, yet you are right next to her! You could be all that she wants and more, but if she is too scared to go for it, you will be left waiting, and in the end, heart broken.

In answer to your question, I think there is a third option! I believe you should take all your goodness, care and support, and find someone who sees it, wants it, and embraces it. What could make you feel better about yourself than that?

Standing up for ourselves is never easy, but I really do think you can do better.

No Trip is complete without a cupcake...

The one and only Steve Prue took me to Crumbs cupcakes in Manhattan... TWICE!

The first round was with my partner in skating crime @njsteph. Of course we had to stop in at Dunkin Donuts, for some blueberry coffee en route...

Once we arrived at the shop it was decision time...

In honour of NC native Steve, I ordered Red Velvet, Steph had Pumpkin, and Mr. Prue chose the Tuxedo flavour.

A few days later... we went back to my new fave cupcake joint, with my incredibly talented adagio skating friends Josiah & Colleen. They stopped in on their way to rehearsals for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Yep, not even being picked up and thrown around could keep lil Colleen from cupcakes ;)

Our order this time included Peanut Butter Cup, Half & Half, Raspberry Cheesecake Brownie, and Grasshopper. And upon the suggestion of our helpful server, I had a delicious Crumbs Latte too!

Self effacing, resourceful & determined

Did anyone see the article "How Holly Golightly Changed the World" in the October issue of Harper's Bazaar?

It was an interesting and clever piece that questions whether the tres chic heroine of Breakfast at Tiffany's could exist today.

"These days it's not a big deal for a single girl to come home at sunrise; most of the good ones do."

I sometimes find myself questioning my place in the world, and wondering what things would be like on the other side of the (white picket) fence. At what stage will I abandon single life? Will I have to completely leave behind the late nights, airline tickets, caffeine, fun, friends, and freedom? Should I have done so already? Would people like me more if I fit more easily into one of their neat & tidy, categorized columns?

I have finally found a place where I belong. I feel comfortable in my version of the world. I say what I feel, and think what I want. I apologize when necessary, and do better when I can.

In 1961, Truman Capote's call-girl cum gamine was considered risque and even contemptuous! Today, she is nothing more than your typical modern woman~ Self effacing, resourceful, and determined.

Q: I’ve been with this guy for two years. We are now in a long distance relationship, but I’m at the point where I don’t know if we are still together. I get a call or a text message every couple of weeks. He’s 4 hours away from me. I was supposed to go with him, but he wanted me to leave my job and my family. He now wants to move closer, but has to come here to get stuff I’m keeping for him. Do I hold on to him or go my own way and see what else is out there?

A: First things first. Do you wish you heard from him more? If so, it's perfectly acceptable for you to ask for what you want and deserve. At this point you don't seem to be getting either. Additionally, only hearing from your mate every couple of weeks, sometimes only in text form, is not enough to sustain a relationship. People in long distance relationships have to work twice as hard to nurture their bond, and keep the fire burning.

How often do you contact him? Do you feel able to text or call him as you wish? If you are trying to contact him and your attempts are going unheard, it is a good indication that things are winding down.

Remember those early days of the relationship when you couldn't wait to hear from each other? Remember when you would get butterflies just thinking of him? Remember when you wondered what the other person was doing and when you would get to see each other again? What happened to those days?

No one said long distance is easy. There is want, and need, and day to day things that you can't share with each other. You can't kiss or touch, and it literally hurts to miss someone like that. However, you can still be invested in each other’s lives.

This is 2011. This is the time of tablets and computers, FaceBook and FaceTime, smart phones and smarter users! My grandparents were separated by war for 5 years, but were still as in love and connected via letters and telegrams, as they were during their courtship. Long distance or long term, the spark should never go out. Not on your end and not on his.

If you can remedy the current state of your communication, there may be hope for you. If not, I wouldn't wait for him to move closer. If the draw towards each other is no longer enough to run home each night and race to the phone, it might already be too late.

Continuing our tradition of cosplay at Comic Con, this year SuicideGirls rocked outfits inspired by a ‘historical’ character from Issue 2 of the new SG Comic (see top left) as drawn by Cameron Stewart (he and Missy came by the booth and signed copies of the comic for fans – see pic top right). The costumes, which were whipped up by Junker Designs, were such a hit the ladies of booth 1632 even made the cover of Entertainment Weekly’s Comic Con photo gallery!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi! We hope you had as much fun as we did.

Cupcake Galavanting

No trip is complete without a cupcake...

When my good friend Korporate Kelly found out I would be in San Diego, she insisted we go to Frosted Robin Cupcakery , in Seaport Village.

Lucky for me, I was staying at the Hilton for Comic Con, so this delicious little shop was right next door!!

When we arrived it was nearly impossible to choose a flavour... (They all looked so delicious!)

Luckily I'm never one to turn down a cupcake, so we settled on a Key Lime & Mocha cupcake

AND two amazing Robins Eggs !

We picked out the Cayman Spice and Peanut Butter eggs, but they change every month, so who knows what goodies they'll have the next time I go?!?

Seaport Village was the perfect place to spend an afternoon! Each of the kiosks, businesses, and restaurants were gorgeous, and best of all, I got my coffee & cupcake fix fixed before the hustle and bustle of SDCC got underway.
